The Fannin Battleground State Historic Site is a memorial to the soldiers who fought the Battle of Coleto Creek during Texas War for Independence in 1836.

Fannin Battleground State Historical Site

After standing valiantly against Mexican forces under General Urrea, Col. James Fannin’s men were without water and running short on ammunition. Fannin surrendered with the request that his men be treated honorably as prisoners of war with hope of parole and that the wounded be tended, but General Urrea could only offer to request leniency of Mexican dictator and general Santa Anna, who had decreed only unconditional surrender. Santa Anna was without mercy, and Col. Fannin and his men were imprisoned and later executed in nearby Goliad. This perceived deception and brutality outraged the Texians, whose cries of, “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” spurred them to victory at San Jacinto.
