Make an Astrolabe at Home
An astrolabe is such a simple instrument you can make one at home. All you need is a washer, 6 inches of string, a thin piece of cardboard, a protractor, a straw, and some glue or tape.
Trace around the protractor on the cardboard, then copy the degree marks on it. Tie the washer to the string and tie the other end of the string around the straw so that it will be at the center of the semicircle. Glue or tape the straw to the flat edge of the cardboard semicircle. Look through the straw to find a star, then look at the string. It should point to the angle of azimuth.
