The Confederate States of America was organized on February 9, 1861.

Most Southerners believed that the Union had originally been designed as a confederation of sovereign states.  If a state was sovereign, it had a right to stay in the Union or to leave.  They hoped that an orderly secession with explanation of cause would be a peaceful process.

Not all Texans wanted to leave the Union. Former Texas President Sam Houston spoke out strongly against the notion of leaving. But once the deed was done, many Texans who had not wanted to leave the Union eventually fought to support the state’s right to do so by a majority vote of its citizens.

Texas was a state in the Confederate States of America from 1861-1865.
